Mass spectrometric techniques

Modern mass spectrometers consist of three main parts, the ion source, where ionisation takes place, the mass analyser, where ions are separated according to their mass-to-charge ratio, and the detector. The combination of these parts allows the construction of instruments customised to special applications. This feature makes mass spectrometers versatile and adaptable tools for almost all parts of analytical chemistry.
